The Carnelian Legacy
By – Cheryl Koevoet
In full disclosure, I don’t imagine that I fit the demographic that the author of this book was looking for. I guess I should’ve read the prompt a little more closely. Elements of this book got a little too “angsty teenager experiences unrequited love” for my flavor. I found myself drawn more to the poisoned chalice than to the internal struggle of a lovesick teenager. With that being said, this book had one of the best plot twists that I’ve read in a while. The author laced the story with subtle foreshadowing enough to tickle your imagination, but all the while leave you doubting as to whether or not you were right.
The story begins with the death of Marisa’s father. She is grieving and seeks the comfort and escape of an afternoon ride on her horse. A freak storm appears and Marisa is caught in a vortex. Little does she know, the storm is actually taking her to another dimension and to a land known as Carnelia.
Koevoet continues to weave a fantasy filled tale with horses, castles, villains, hostile takeovers, and more. During her journey Marisa experiences a rollercoaster ride of emotion – separation from her family, love for someone who is betrothed to someone else, all the while being courted by the enemy of her true love. Like I said, I’m not the right demographic for that kind of tale, so the impact is lost on me. A few people do almost die though, which is the equivalent to an action scene in a chick-flick. Needless to say, it kept me engaged.
Overall, I rate the book 4 out of 5 stars. When I have a daughter, these are the kinds of books that will be stocking her shelves.
